The Resource Management Division of the Fairfax County Park Authority serves the community through nature and culture at nine diverse parks. Burke Lake Park

Position: Campground Attendant
Location: Burke Lake Park; 7315 Ox Road, Fairfax Station, VA 22039.
Hours: Friday through Sunday mid-April – mid-November, Part time/20 hours per week average. Will include mornings, afternoons, and nights. Expected to work weekends and holidays.
Salary: $12.00 - $13.47 /hour

Job Description: Hired applicants will be tasked with, but not limited to, cash handling regarding rental camp sites and merchandise, assisting patrons with reservations, performing regular campground checks to ensure upkeep and rule compliance, inspecting restrooms for upkeep, enforcing/informing patrons of rules, and communicating incidents with park management.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be able to lift, up to 30 pounds unassisted. 

Preferred Qualifications: Ability to work alone. Able to repeatedly lift 20 lbs. or more. Camping experience preferred. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. Ability to deal effectively with citizen inquiries and questions. CPR training recommended but will be provided upon employment.

Acts as lead first responder on behalf of the Park Authority in potential and actual emergency situations occurring on site while on duty.  Must be able to repeatedly lift 50 lbs. or more. May work other park facilities as needed.

Preferred Qualifications: Management experience. Ability to work alone in a park, work with others in a team setting, have effective communicative skills, and make decisions that may affect park operations. CPR, Boat U.S. and Basic Water Safety training recommended but will be provided upon employment.

Position Title: Park Naturalist/Outdoor Instructor

Instructor Description: Under the supervision of the Park Programmer present interpretive programs with provided outlines in natural and cultural history, geocaching, orienteering, outdoor recreation, kayaking and natural science topics for age groups ranging from preschool to adults. Groups can include school groups, scout groups, camps, public, thematic class series, events, and off-site and special request programs.  Assist operations staff with park events.  Assist in assessing the site’s natural resources with the Lake Front Senior Interpreter. Assist Camp Director and play a vital role in our summer camps. Provide operational support to all programs.

Minimum Qualifications: Experience with natural sciences, education, recreation, or a closely related field. Experience presenting educational programs to groups and teaching children. Ability to communicate effectively. Experience using a kayak or canoe or willingness to learn. Strong organizational skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office. Must be at least 18 years old and have a clean driving record. First Aid/CPR/AED certified or the ability to attain certification within the first six months of employment.

Colvin Run Mill Historic Park

Position: Educator/Historian
Hours: 15 to 18 hours per week. Max: 900 hours per year.
Schedule: Fall and Spring Tuesday to Thursday 9am to 2pm. Occasional weekend work, some flexibility.
Winter and Summer: Variable with some flexibility
Compensation: $13 to $16 per hour.
Location: Colvin Run Mill Historic Park, Great Falls, Virginia.
 
About Colvin Run Mill: Colvin Run mill is the only operational 19th-century water-powered mill in Fairfax County. This beautiful and historic location also boasts a historic early 20th century store, historic miller’s house, and 35 acres of woodlands. This site offers programs and classes on history and nature and includes tours, events, school programs, camps and more.
 
Educator/Historian Requirements:
Colvin Run Mill Historic Site seeks a charismatic team member to lead school programs and other scout and cultural history programs. Applicants should have strong oral communication skills with the ability to present and teach to a diverse audience of all ages. This team member will be responsible for leading school programs, tours, family and scout programs, and assisting with events. Additional duties may include administrative, front-desk, and other duties as assigned.
 
Hours: Availability for morning school trips in the spring and fall. Other opportunities available for weekend programs and tours. Winter hours may vary with flexibility depending on programs. Average 15-18 hours weekly.
 
Required Qualifications: Experience presenting programs to individuals or groups or working with children and/or families. Ability to communicate effectively, interest or experience with interpretation, history, museum studies or education.
 
Preferred Qualifications: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in a related field, and experience presenting interpretive programs or teaching children.

Frying Pan Farm Park

Title: Store Operation Staff

Responsibilities: Assist Store lead with training, operational issues, which includes (but not limited to): managing staff, housekeeping, administrative duties, pricing and merchandising. Overseeing the inventory of the store, purchasing and receiving. Providing exceptional customer service and ensuring the employees also provide the same level of service. Responsibly managing store revenue, including accurate cash handling, drawer reconciliation, ticket management, and delivery of deposit. Attracting customers by creative merchandising. Ensuring interior and exterior of store is maintained to park standards. Planning events and promote. 

Preferred Qualifications: Strong leadership skills. Ability to effectively teach/develop others to next level. Good merchandising skills and a flair for conceiving and implementing creative merchandising themes. Strong operations experience in receiving, stock and inventory as well as front-end management. Strong interpersonal, motivational, communication and organizational skills. An upbeat demeanor, with a sales-oriented personality. The ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.

The Program Coordinator will be responsible for the development, promotion, implementation, and evaluation of on-site and outreach programs, The position includes day-to-day office duties, scheduling educational programming, implementing tours, and working with staff on the creation of new and upcoming programming and exhibits. This position is the primary contact for teachers and school districts. This includes marketing programs, booking school visits, handling day-of field-trip logistics to include staffing, and working in partnership with schools to develop programs and teacher training that meet curriculum needs. The incumbent works closely with other staff and in cross-disciplinary teams. They teach programs as well as are responsible for training staff and volunteers to teach education programs. This position requires work one weekend day a week.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Implementation of Programming (40%): Facilitate, coordinate, and implement programming for Pre-K to 12th grade school groups, families, scouts, and camps. Secure all educational materials on time. Ensure the tidiness of the program spaces. Responsible for set-up, and clean-up of all programs. Assist in the coordination of public programming, tours, and community outreach. Identify/produce educational program materials to teach the programs. Secure staff and volunteer support as needed. Collects data to evaluate programs.
  • Creation of Programming (20%): Monitor the effectiveness of current programs to identify opportunities for change. Develop on-site and outreach educational programs (e.g. schools, scouts, and families) programs. Assist in logistic planning for new programming. Research as assigned to create programming.
  • Administrative (20%): Provide customer service support to event participants by responding to telephone and email communications about events and programs. Manages reservations and collects deposits and fees. Keep quarterly inventories of educational supplies. Purchase educational materials to teach the programs.   • Facility Operations (10%): Serve as manager on duty, facilitate store sales, and perform front desk, administrative, and groundskeeping jobs included as needed. Opens and closes facilities. Title: Volunteer and Event Coordinator
Location: Sully Historic Site, 3650 Historic Sully Way, Chantilly, VA 20151
Salary: $16.76 per hour, depending on skills and experience.
Status: E (Part-Time, maximum 1560 hours per year, eligible for health insurance)
Hours: 20 to 30 hours/week; some weekend work required
Schedule: This is a part-time, year-round position.

The Volunteer and Event Coordinator manages a large volunteer program, manages the gift shop, routinely acts as manager on duty, leads interpretive programs, assists with special events, marketing, and outreach. Drives county vehicles to countywide locations delivering supplies and supporting programs.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Volunteer coordination (40%): Under supervision of the Historian III, manages a large volunteer program, including recruitment, training, scheduling, interviewing, hiring, evaluating and recognition. Responsible for site volunteer budget, purchasing and fundraising. Primary point of contact for all volunteer enquiries. Annually plans and implements several special events for volunteers and a variety of site training sessions. Supervises the collection of volunteer data. Prepares and submits written reports for the site and division. Working with other staff members, determines site volunteer program goals and implements division volunteer program goals at site and division level. Represents site on division volunteer committee. Oversees and coordinates volunteer information on the website.
  • Special Events coordination (25%): Assists with site and division special events. This may include scheduling, writing contracts and letters of agreement, creating invoices, creating layouts, and coordinating site visits. Communicate special events needs and requirements cross-departmentally. Including custodial, security, technology, digital services, grounds, etc. Follow up with event vendors and local government officials to ensure that all proper permits and insurance certificates are in place before events. Keep calendar database updates to manage schedules and execute setups. Assist with client/vendor acknowledgment and correspondence. Organize, maintain, and track event inventory including signage and technical equipment. Work with suppliers to schedule and coordinate deliveries. Ensures expeditious response to phone and email inquiries before, during and after events. Provide customer service support to event participants by responding to telephone and email communications about events and programs, including maintaining RSVP lists for special events and door lists for community programs. Ensures spaces are functional and in ready condition using set-up diagrams. Assists the scheduling volunteers for large-scale events such as Earth Day, Sully Car Show, and Juneteenth. Manage and track annual expenses for events budget.
  • Marketing/advertising and outreach (15%): Research, write and evaluate the annual site marketing plan. Markets natural and cultural history programs and events, including website coordination. Routinely engages in community outreach activities.
  • Facility Operations (10%): Serve as manager on duty, facilitate store sales, and perform front desk, administrative, and groundskeeping jobs included as needed. Opens and closes facilities. Inspects facilities and adjacent areas and ensures that they are presentable, safe and acceptable for public use. Has thorough knowledge of Park Authority policies and procedures for handling emergency situations in the park. Enforces rules and regulations and professionally handles any infractions. Greets the public and provides technical information both in person and by telephone. Exercises initiative and good judgment when responding to citizen's inquiries pertaining to natural, historical, and environmental issues. Process sales and class registrations at front desk. Participates in staff meetings. Supports the Visitor Center as needed including one weekend day a week.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities assigned not covered within the position description.

Requirements: Sully Historic Site seeks a charismatic team member to manage the existing volunteer program and assist with special events. Ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing, excellent organizational skills. Applicant must have the ability to foster and grow a diverse volunteer base, work outdoors in all types of weather, stand for long periods, traverse uneven ground, carry, pull and (or) lift up to 25 lbs. unassisted. Train and supervise the work of volunteers and collaborate closely with the Site Manager. All applicants must have the desire to learn and ask questions about the site’s history and collections and have a positive attitude. The ability to communicate clearly and be comfortable discussing difficult subjects like the institution of slavery is a must. Additional duties may include administrative, front-desk, and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in education, history, museum studies or a related field. Experience managing volunteer programs and coordinating large events. Knowledge of diversity and inclusion best practices to communicate effectively with diverse ages, backgrounds, and all abilities. Proficiency with common digital productivity programs (Microsoft Office), social media platforms, and digital communications platforms. Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple job responsibilities. Energetic and personable; an innovative, creative thinker. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Preferred qualifications: Demonstrated experience managing volunteer programs with people from all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Works well independently and in a team environment; adaptable and solution oriented. Experience building and maintaining relationships with community partners, including other sites, museums and organizations, K-12 schools and institutes of higher education, and government officials. Excellent organizational skills: self- motivated with the ability to manage goals and productivity. The position requires strong communication skills and a significant ability to get along with many different types of people.

Certificates and Licenses Required: Driver's license (required), First Aid/CPR certification within 90 days of appointment.

Necessary Special Requirements: All appointees must also agree to a criminal background check including fingerprinting, attend mandatory training, and possess a valid driver’s license.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 25 lbs. Must be able to navigate uneven terrain on park property. Must be able to climb 3 flights of stairs. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations. Title: Store Clerk
Location: Sully Historic Site, 3650 Historic Sully Way, Chantilly, VA 20151
Salary: $13-$17 per hour
Status: G (Part-Time, maximum 900 hours per year)
Hours: 17.30 hours per week/52 weeks per year

Schedule: This is a part-time, year-round position required to work weekends and occasional weekdays (special events).

Responsibilities: Assist Visitor Services Manager with operational issues, which includes (but not limited to): housekeeping, administrative duties, pricing and merchandising. Overseeing the inventory of the store, purchasing, and receiving. Providing exceptional customer service and ensuring the employees also provide the same level of service. Responsibly managing store revenue, including accurate cash handling, drawer reconciliation, ticket management, and delivery of deposit. Attracting customers by creative merchandising. Ensuring interior and exterior of store is maintained to park standards. Planning events and promotion.

Preferred Qualifications: Strong leadership skills. Ability to effectively teach/develop others to the next level. Good merchandising skills and a flair for conceiving and implementing creative merchandising themes. Retail experience in receiving, stock and inventory as well as front-end management. Strong interpersonal, motivational, communication and organizational skills. An upbeat demeanor, with a sales-oriented personality. Experience with handling cash and various payment methods as well as working with customers in-person, over the phone or through email. The ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
